DISCOVER: Amy Studt Releases New Single "Overdose", Teases Music Video, And Announces Name Of Third

Another new single has been released from 00’s star, Amy Studt, titled “Overdose”. It has got to be one of her most personal songs to-date and we’re honoured to be able to hear a track that was created during one of her worst times – bad things happen to all of us, it’s what we take, create, and learn from those experiences that make us into better people, mentally and physically. This song’s release follows up her previous track “Sleepwalker“.

Amy Studt hit the UK’s music industry hard in 2003, at just 16. She had three UK top 20 hits with “Just A Little Girl”, “Misfit”, and “Under The Thumb”. Her False Smiles album hit number 18 on the UK Chart. Her fourth single “All I Wanna Do”, a cover version of Sheryl Crow’s hit, spawned a re-release of her debut album. Unfortunately, it only charted at number 21, and she was subsequently dropped from her label. Five years later (2008), she returned with a second album My Paper Made Men which spawned three singles “Furniture”, “Chasing The Light”, and “Nice Boys”. Now, album three has been a long-time coming with plenty of teasers from this British singer-songwriter, we’re excited about this deep dark path she’s taken and cannot wait to hear more new music.

According to an Instagram post, Amy Studt wrote this track in 2012 and in the post, she goes on to say: “I think this may be the only song I didn’t record with Toby [Kidd]. I wrote it in a psychiatric facility about the experiences that had brought me there. They had a piano in that hospital and that is where I wrote Overdose. When I Ieft hospital I got on a flight to New York and recorded it out there with Matt Boynton. It’s about isolation, being haunted by the past and the present, and being at the end. The ‘life in me’ line was because when I made my last attempt I felt the life seeping out of me and out of the back door of my house up into the night sky: the back door where I would sit and smoke and look at the stars every night. I wanted to erase everything. Every memory I had or anyone had of me, every picture, and just disappear. It’s about that moment of finality: remembering the simplicity and beauty of something, the beginning of falling in love; feeling very alone and wishing you could go back and something pulls you back. A very small and fragile hope. It doesn’t scare me to talk openly about my experiences, tho I am aware that they may make some people uncomfortable. But I can only be true as to why these songs were written, for myself as a way to expel, express and document.”

The song was written by Amy Studt and recorded in New York with Matt Boynton acting as producer. There is also a music video coming our way soon, which we literally cannot wait for. This is a highly personal track and we are glad that Amy Studt has shown her vulnerable side and given the world the opportunity to hear it as well as understand where the track came from.

The song has a similar feel to “I Was Jesus In Your Veins” with a slowed-down piano backing track and a sadness quality in her voice. As the song progresses so does her vocal quality bringing in some high notes to contrast the opening as well as a brilliant falsetto. Controlled throughout, if anything, Amy Studt proves that the past 17 years since her debut track has allowed her to become a fully artistic singer-songwriter. Lyrically, “Overdose” – as Amy Studt mentioned – is about isolation, being haunted by the past and the present, and being at the end; you can really hear that throughout as the words paint visual scenes that take you to that moment in time. It’s a great concept and her vocal on the track is what makes it even more addicting.

As well as the teaser, she has also announced, recently, that her third studio album will be titled Happiest Girl In The Universe, which certainly feels like sarcasm considering the songs we have heard to date, although it could also mean that what we are hearing is her journey to becoming more happier in who she is and therefore, by the final track, she could well be feeling like the happiest girl in the universe. We’ll soon find out as she continues to drop new music every six weeks. The album is set to drop on 4 October 2019 – we really cannot wait!
