Kirsty Bohan and Lukas Joyce: Teens killed after car driven by 13-year-old smashes into tree

HEADFORD, IRELAND: A car reportedly driven by a 13-year-old boy and claimed the lives of two young teenagers during an Easter weekend in . Kirsty Bohan and Lukas Joyce, both 14, were travelling in the car outside Headford, County Galway when it crashed just before 6 am on Monday, April 10. 

Lukas, who was supposedly in the passenger seat was while Kristy who was sitting at the back was rushed to hospital but died shortly after. The driver and another young girl who sat in the back with Kirsty, are now being treated in a hospital.

Kristy suffered serious injuries

The teenage girl was transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where she was in a but the driver's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. According to , all four schoolchildren were friends and second year students at Presentation College Headford. 

The school issued a statement

The school which is on Easter holidays, issued a statement, saying that they had lost "two treasured members" of their community. "We pray for all the families and friends of those involved that they may be granted some peace and succour at this tragic time," they added. "We also pray for our own school community, that we may find the strength to support each other and carry on. We ask for your support, prayers and the space to grieve as a school community."

The school opened their study hall

Despite the holiday, the school opened their study hall on Tuesday afternoon, April 11, from 11 am to 2 pm to support anyone who is affected by the tragedy. "You are all very welcome to come and have a cup of tea in a warm and safe environment," they added. 

"As a community we are all thinking of the two families who have lost their loved children," local councillor Andrew Reddington told the . "There's a dark cloud over the community in the Headford area. Each and every person is thinking of the families of the young persons who lost their lives last night and are praying for the people that are in hospital. As a community we will rally together to support the families but ask for everyone to respect the families who need to grieve the loss of their children." 

Gardai confirmed that they are probing the collision that took place at around 5.45 am on the L6127 at Glennagarraun in the Ballyfruit area of Headford, County Galway.

"The only vehicle involved in this collision had four occupants onboard, two boys and two girls, all of whom were young teenagers", a spokesperson told . "One boy was pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining three occupants were taken to University Hospital Galway where a girl has since been pronounced dead. The other occupants remain in University Hospital Galway for treatment of their injuries."
